Mission

In 1954 First Christian Church, of Canton, OH through its Board of Elders concluded that a new congregation should be established in the geographical area between Canton and Massillon. The first minister was called on August 8, 1954 with a view to the leading of a new congregation. He began duties of service in the community on October 1, 1954. On August 22nd, an organizational meeting for the proposed church was held at the Genoa School. They began worshipping on that site beginning September 5, 1954. There were 184 people present for worship.

The name, Perry Christian Church, was adopted at the formal organizational meeting on November 21st. In the early part of 1955, the decision was made to purchase a five-acre tract of land at 139 Perry Drive at a cost of $16,800.00. Construction of the new building began August 23rd. This was the first of three planned units. Worship services for the growing church were held in the Fellowship Hall starting on July 15, 1956. Groundbreaking for the second unit was June 12, 1960. It was completed in February of 1961 and included a chapel, library, three classrooms, nursery, church office, pastor's study, workroom and a kitchenette.

The final phase of the original building plan, which would include a permanent worship center, was begun on May 21, 1972. It was dedicated and put into service one year later. The worship center has a seating capacity of 600 with the overflow.

As we prepare to enter into the next century, the leadership felt it necessary to bring our facilities up to date. This was approved by the congregation in 1997, and we have begun to undergo these improvements and additions.

Currently three Leadership Teams oversee our Bible School Ministry. These are the Adult Christian Education Ministry Team which is led by a volunteer, the Youth Ministry Team which is led by a staff member (Minister of Evangelism and Youth), and the Children's Ministry Team which is led by a staff Member (Children's Minister).

Each Ministry Team is responsible for the continuing education and recruitment of teachers for their departments.

Worship style is blended and involves a Praise Team. During the fall, winter and spring, the choir provides specials and selections.

Our Minister of Music also works to provide a flow of music and message. We have also worked to present a spring Drama that involves many from the congregation.

Our children, grades 1-5, take time on Sunday mornings to worship in an environment of their own.

Other opportunities are provided for our family to grow and serve throughout each week with a focus on Wednesday activities that include youth activities. The majority of our family have completed high school while many have gone on to further degrees in a variety of fields.

Because Northeast Ohio is an industrialized area, many of the men in the church are involved in factory production, engineering and technical work as well as business, a small percentage are also involved in carpentry, consultation, sales and education.

Approximately 20% are self-employed in various fields. Approximately 40% of the women are homemakers, while an additional 40% are also involved in office work. The remaining 20% work as teachers, beauticians, factory production workers, and in other various fields. The majority of men and women have finished high school, and approximately 25% of the men and 20% of the women have college degrees in different fields.

Special interests among the men include gardening, bowling, softball, golf, hunting/fishing, woodworking, antiques, automobile repairs and remodeling.

Special interests among the women include gardening and canning, various crafts, music and antique collecting.
